Bryon L. Dorgan


Senator Dorgan served as a U.S. Senator from North Dakota from 1991-2011. During that time he served for 16 years in the Senate leadership, first as Assistant Democratic Floor Leader and then as Chairman of the Democratic Policy Committee.

He was Chairman of various Senate committees and subcommittees on the issues of Energy, Aviation, Appropriations, Water Policy and Indian Affairs.

Prior to serving in the Senate, he served as a U.S. Congressman for 12 years – 10 of which included serving on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, dealing with issues including tax policy, healthcare, and the economy.

Senator Dorgan is now active in his post-Senate career teaching, writing, consulting and serving on a number of Boards of Directors.

He is a recognized leader in the fields of energy policy, economy, aviation, trade, Indian Affairs, healthcare and more. Dorgan’s current activities include:
  • Senior Policy Advisor at Arent Fox, LLP – one of Washington DC’s premiere law firms
  • Adjunct Visiting Professor at Georgetown University – Public Policy Institute
  • Senior Fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center – a leading Washington, DC think tank – He is the Co-Chair of a major energy policy study
  • Chairman & Founder of the Center for Native American Youth at the Aspen Institute – a nonprofit dedicated to helping Indian Children focusing on teen suicide prevention, education opportunities and more
  • Member of the Board of Governors at Argonne National Laboratory at the University of Chicago
  • Serving on two Boards of Directors of a public company and a private startup company
Senator Dorgan is the author of three books. A New York Times best-selling book on trade, titled: Take This Job and Ship It. A book about America’s near financial collapse, titled: Reckless: How Debt, Deregulation and Dark Money Nearly Bankrupted America and How We Can Fix It. And his most recent book, published in March 2012, is a novel he co-authored with David Hagberg titled: Blowout, the first of a two-book series called eco-thrillers on the subject of energy. He’s under contract to co-author the second book due out in 2013.
